My Seven Feminist Standout Moments From 2019

We are now well into a rocky 2020 and so, I wanted to look back on the standout moments in feminism for me in 2019.

I could write this post and many more about all the momentous feminist moments in 2019 like Finland electing the world’s youngest Prime Minister Sanna Marin, a woman, (albeit quickly replaced by Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz) or the fact that her entire government is female led. I could talk about 16-year-old Greta Thunberg being named Time’s Person of the Year or the US Women’s soccer team making history for not just their skill but their determination to achieve equal pay and treatment as their male ‘equivalents.’

But I won’t talk about those; I’m much more interested in the supposedly minuscule acts of solidarity and respect that I witnessed on the ground by men which gave me hope that a shift in societal attitudes is actually occurring. It is my strong belief that there is little point in grand world gender equality accords if the women on the ground don’t benefit from the anticipated change. And so, I wanted to acknowledge these moments, whether they are as a result of feminism actually working or otherwise.

Now, before I give these examples, I must acknowledge the extremely low bar against which these events are set. And this is not necessarily to praise men for doing the bare minimum but…
